Design Career Advice From David Pumpkins

  1. Surround yourself with a great team

When you’re looking for your next gig, remember that you’re interviewing them too. Get out there and find a team that will help you grow professionally.

2. Put yourself out there

Find a mentor, or even better several mentors. You’d be surprised how many designers are willing to hop in and mentor, if you just ask. Mentorship doesn’t have to be super formal. Sometimes just having someone to bounce ideas off of can be a powerful relationship.

3. Be unexpected

Don’t be afraid to try new things. Push the envelope with your design choices.

4. Stay weird

Dont let others stifle your creativity. If you feel like you’re stuck in a work environment that is sucking you dry, it’s time to start looking for a new opportunity.

5. Always ask for feedback

Become a lifelong learner. Ask for critiques from people you trust. You’ll only improve your work.
