The Red Stapler Effect: Excessive Meetings Edition

You know how sometimes people just snap? There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason, they just go from annoyed to burn the office down psycho over something that seems trivial?

My Red Stapler is unnecessary meetings. (If you haven’t seen Office Space, go watch it right now.)

I love productive meetings. You get in, you discuss what needs to be done, give updates, discuss blockers and GET OUT.

Then you have the people who loooveeee meetings. They love them so much that they’ll have meetings about meetings. Those people make me want to claw my eyes out.

Im INCREDIBLY fortunate to work for a company that values efficiency and productivity. We’re able to pivot quickly because we have access to ask one line questions on Slack. They don’t need to be answered immediately. When a person comes off of do not disturb, they get notified and respond.

This saves us from hours and hours of painful unnecessary meeting nonsense.

When something is a bit complex, we shoot a Slack message that says, “If you get a minute could we hop on a Hangout for 5?”

Then we do. And we finish in 5 minutes or less. This works because we have a work culture that promotes both supporting our teammates in any way we can, AND being respectful of other people’s time.

Cultivate those values in your company, grab the communication tools that fit your staff best, and light your meeting room desk on fire.

Just kidding — but I know it will be tempting. Maybe just take a bat to it instead. 😉
